New research indicates that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such medications should be cognizant of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
