The star has handed over the entirety of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the MVT, which operates to protect the UK's independent music venues.

The star was presented with the prize on October 16 as his new release the album was chosen as the outstanding release of the previous year.

He has opted to give the cash to the trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally would not have achieved what I am doing today if it weren't for all the shows I played around the region, and beyond, when I was just getting going," said Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are struggling."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these venues have ceased operations – roughly one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Recently, major artists like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by applying a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which supports local stages.

Sam Fender also took part, raising in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support 38 small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money helped spaces that were confronting possible closure due to challenges stemming from flooding, fires and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, conflicts and sound issues.

Other venues were granted monetary aid in modernizing facilities and technical equipment that directly benefitted musicians and concertgoers.

"The idea that money from shows in big venues backs the smaller venues, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just logical," Fender has commented.

They are one example who gave their honor prize money to charity

He is far from the only musician to give his Mercury Prize prize money to charitable organizations.

In Pulp won the award in 1996 for their release their work, lead singer Jarvis Cocker announced that the group would contribute their winnings to the charity War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite shared her bounty between a few charities, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I gave a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked updated gear," Ms Dynamite explained to a publication.

Two years ago, the band contributed their funds to the local youth club that supported their act, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients M People donated their prize to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was identified with the disease.

"Winning was quite enough," stated singer Heather Small. "The cash was the extra but we didn't need the extra, because we had the honor. So our winning touched somebody else's life."

In the past week, the MVT announced it had protected a couple of local spots in south-east England, by placing them under public stewardship.

The first in that area and The Croft in that location were acquired under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is backed by Arts Council England and music fans who buy "stakes" in the venues.
